First and foremost I am the father of an amazing girl who is the center of my universe.  My wife, Maria, is my business partner, lifeline, and biggest supporter; but most of all, my best friend.  I am an Olympic weightlifter, mountain biker, triathlete and a passionate CrossFitter.  I can't get enough of any physical activity and if there is an event which gets my heart racing, I want to be a part of it.  I have a passion for fitness and want to share my passion through CrossFit Beverly. My introduction to CrossFit was in April 2008, after that discovery I was flabbergasted how through all my training I hadn't heard of CrossFit sooner.  I started incorporating CrossFit into my endurance training as a supplement to the LSD (Long Slow Distance) training for triathlons and cross country mountain bike races.  CrossFit is now my only source of training for any event weather it be a triathlon or working in the garden.  CrossFit has changed my life, and that is why I brought it to the Beverly, Morgan Park and Mt. Greenwood communities.

I am a retired police officer from the Illinois State Police and spent four years in the Marine Corps Reserve.  I have always strived to maintain the best level of fitness possible, not only for the performance of my duties but general health reasons as well.  I received my CF Level I (CF-LI) Trainer Certificate in December 2012, and have been coaching ever since. It was while running one day in early 2012 that I decided to stop in at CrossFit Beverly when it was located at 109th and Western Avenue to see what it was all about.  I had no idea that I was walking into something that I would not only grow to love but something that would also give me so much in return. The best thing about CrossFit for me, both as an athlete and coach, is the fact that you are surrounded by people of all shapes, sizes, ages, backgrounds, and abilities who come together for the same purpose - self-improvement, and CrossFit offers the opportunity to do this.  All you need is a positive attitude, a willingness to listen and learn, and a strong desire to do your best each and every day, recognizing that some days will be better than others. This stuff is addicting, rewarding, and is the hardest fun you will ever have!

I have been involved in CrossFit for over four years! I can honestly say this is the one workout program that I will never get bored with because each day is so different. I come from a running background, so I always loved cardio work, but now I can say I love lifting a heavy barbell as well. My initial reason for joining CrossFit was for the challenging workouts, but it's the fantastic friends and community at CrossFit Beverly that sustains my passion for cardio and heavy lifting. As a coach, I coach CrossFit Kids classes, CFB's On-Ramp program and I occasionally coach the adult classes too. I am unique in my favorite exercises as they are the ones most everyone, let's be frank, loathe; thrusters, wall balls, burpees, and Medicine ball cleans. I also love gymnastics. So any semi-dangerous gymnastic skill I'll usually attempt for a laugh :-) I'm super peppy, positive and I am an extremely energetic coach! I love coaching and being a part of this amazing community :-)

NICK KAKOS

I've been involved in sports and fitness for as long as I can remember. I have been fortunate enough to have wonderful parents that introduced me to sports at an early age. My childhood consisted of moving from sport to sport as the seasons changed. I was able to work hard enough to play basketball competitively at the high school level and eventually at a Division III college. Upon graduation, my sanity required that I continue to stick with the fitness industry. I received my nationally recognized personal trainer certification through the American Council On Exercise and began a career as a personal trainer with Bally Total Fitness. During this time, I found how rewarding it is to help and lead someone who has a desire to improve their lives through exercise. Through the years I have witnessed and experimented with various trends in the fitness industry, but I have yet to be as enticed nor as excited as I am with the ideology and mantra of CrossFit.

A neighbor of mine asked me to take a look at CrossFit.com back in 2011 and to tell him what I thought. I pulled up a video of the WOD of the day and was hooked. I was watching raw athletes picking up weights and just throwing them to the ground. Then they would immediately jump and start swinging on bars and climbing ropes and run and pick up weights again. But that wasn't all. People were ripping their shirts off, and small women were lifting heavier weights and outworking them! I had to find out more. Lo, and behold I found CrossFit Beverly and became a part of the CrossFit Beverly Team in 2013. What makes CrossFit, so fun and inspiring to me is that the strongest most skilled athlete has just as much passion and concern for our newest least experienced athlete as he or she has for their self. The desire to help fellow members and to maintain a positive and welcoming atmosphere for all is unlike any gym I have ever been a part of. My goal is to make every participant in my classes smile, work hard and most importantly, have fun.

Hello! my name is Halle Engel and I am one of your coaches here at CrossFit Beverly. I am a Southside of Chicago native and I am currently pursuing an Exercise Science degree in my senior year of college. I found the love and passion for CrossFit unexpectedly about a year and a half ago by being overwhelmingly welcomed into the CrossFit Beverly family. I was a collegiate basketball athlete at a college in downstate Illinois. When I came home for summer break I came across CrossFit Beverly athletes running in front of my house, performing the workout "Murph."  I had no idea there was a CrossFit Box at the end of my block.   I walked into the box having no concept of CrossFit or even what CrossFit meant.  But I was welcomed, accepted and cared for by the entire community the second I said "hello." Since then, I have found an indescribable passion for the CrossFit Beverly community.  

My love for CrossFit and the CrossFit Beverly community ultimately made me decide not to go back downstate to continue college, and I transferred home to attend a local college and pursue my CrossFit passion.  I left behind the dream of continuing as a collegiate athlete, and found my forever family, CrossFit Beverly, in full. During this time of transition, I started as an intern within the box learning more about CrossFit and the ins and outs of working at a CrossFit box. Recently I took the leap in December of 2017 to attend the CrossFit Level 1 trainers certificate to receive my credentials to be a CrossFit Trainer. I have fallen in love with the idea of not only helping others in achieving goals, but seeing the process unfold before me. The opportunity to be able to assist those wanting to reach their full potential and overcome obstacles they never thought they would see the other side of is the reason I coach.
